 He was the official who encouraged its reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein to follow the trail from the break-in at Democratic National Committee headquarters in the Watergate complex in Washington to the highest levels of the Nixon administration.

 Deep Throat, the mystery man who reigned as Washington's best-kept secret source for more than 30 years, was not just any shadowy, cigarette-smoking tipster in a raincoat. He was the No. 2 official of the F.B.I., W. Mark Felt, who helped The Washington Post unravel the Watergate scandal and the presidency of Richard M. Nixon, a feat that he lived to see disclosed on Tuesday, frail but smiling at 91

深喉之所以现在跳出来承认是因为----

The 91-year-old Mr. Felt and his family clearly felt it was now or never and talked to Vanity Fair magazine. Younger people who weren't around when Richard Nixon was president may at least relate to the family's hopes of using their long-held secret to pay for the next generation's tuition.



前不久,新闻周刊用匿名消息来源报道美军亵渎***事件----

In the current climate of public skepticism about the use of anonymous sources in journalism, Mr. Woodward and Mr. Bernstein went out of their way in their statement yesterday to note that "many other sources and officials assisted us and other reporters for the hundreds of stories that were written in The Washington Post about Watergate."





对于此事,我的看法是这样的----

Watergate aficionados will mourn the end to a 30-year cottage industry of Deep Throat speculation. 

 You don't read a mystery to find out that the answer to the central riddle is the guy who had a walk-on part on Page 143





深喉能长寿是因为他戒烟了---

I have a few bones to pick with Woodward and Bernstein. One is that, in All the President's Men, Deep Throat is described as a heavy smoker. But Felt quit smoking in 1943. I suppose Woodstein would call this necessary misdirection. I call it conscious fabrication, however trivial.
